Wrist Watches - Food-for-Thought

Men's wrist watches are probably the most popular jewellery accessory. They come in many styles and a huge variety of prices. A  wrist watch says a lot about the man wearing it. Do you think he would prefer a conventional dial watch or a digital watch with a high tech display? Though you can now purchase a combined analogue and digital watch.

There are several other factors to consider.

It is said that you can judge a person's personality by his shoes. Well, this could be true of watches also. The watch around his wrist is also a reflection of his individuality and personality. So when purchasing a watch, please bear in mind the personality of the person for whom you are buying.

If the man you have in mind prefers a casual style then the watch you buy for him should reflect that style. Do not buy a particularly stylish or designer wristwatch for him because either he will not appreciate it and may not wear it much, or it will stick out like beacon in contrast to the rest of his character.

This might seem a little strange but do look and think about what type of wrist he has. Does he have a slender wrist or is he a heavily built person. This will again assist in determining the size and style of the watch that you finally purchase.

Just like spectacles may look a little out of place on larger faces so do small watches on heavily built hairy wrist! The decide what he might be doing when he wears the watch. Might he be going to the gym with it perspiring and perhaps swimming underwater in the pool whilst wearing his beloved Christmas present? In which case perhaps you need to consider a sporty watch that is obviously water resistant and has useful functions such as a distance counter and a timer for example. Some watches even come with a calories burnt recorder, which tells him how many calories he's consumed relative to the amount of exercise carried out. Perhaps encourage him to take it to bed with him! Only kidding, I don't suppose anybody really reads this bit!

Of course he would look highly unprofessional and inappropriate wearing a sporty watch in a company office where a degree of smartness and style might be expected - especially if he's mixing with customers. Buy him a classic yet subtle watch that suggests professionalism, class and ability when you walk into the room to close that deal with a customer. Mickey Mouse may well cause a smile in the pub but says the wrong thing about a man in a business environment. Even the width and colour of the strap or bracelet determines the suitability of the watch to his style. This is linked more to his age, skin tone and lifestyle. Students and younger men in general may prefer snazzy colours. However professional men should perhaps have a more understated colour yet with a real air of quality.

Stainless steel straps are a great choice for an all-round general purpose watch. They suit most men and are very comfortable to wear. However if he travels on business to hot or humid countries then a steel strap can be quite uncomfortable as the steel becomes hotter and hotter.

The final decision of course has to be your own. Just think hard about the man in question, his style, his build and where and when he will be wearing his watch. If you get it right he'll be delighted with his Christmas present and wear it for years..
