Speed Camera Detectors

Here are some facts about exceeding speed limits and fines.

The government aims, rightly or wrongly, to make exceeding speed limits as anti social as drink driving
The police keep the funds they receive from fines for excess speed
Numbers of speed cameras have risen sharply in recent years but have now peaked.
Many of the so called "Safety Camera Partnerships" are in fact run by non-police management and staff, including the camera operators.

Some of the mobile camera vans can detect and record excess speed from up to 1000 metres away.

Speeding points on your licence can affect your career
Radar Detector users are reported in a MORI report to have fewer accidents
GPS based speed trap and radar detectors are legal in the UK.

The basic fixed speeding fine is £60 and 3 points. A court appearance is required if the speed is over a certain threshold.
Penalty points may increase your car insurance costs

80%+ of speeding prosecutions come from fixed cameras
Over 2 million speeding tickets were issued last year

We promote the use of radar detectors and other similar devices for two reasons. Firstly, anybody driving many miles will break the speed limit at some point as their speed creep up as they follow the car in front. They are however probably driving very safely. You should be reminded about your speed in case you are prosecuted for a crime you had no intention of committing. An advanced warning will allow drivers to manage their speed of approach safely and smoothly.

Secondly, speed cameras really should be on dangerous roads and at accident blackspots slowing traffic down and catching only the most reckless drivers who do not sensibly judge a dangerous road or are unfamiliar with the road ahead. So these products will provide advanced warning of probable danger ahead. Unfortunately fixed and mobile speed cameras are regularly placed on straight flat clear sections of road or perhaps where the speed limit has recently been reduced with the sole intention of catching drivers, often only slightly in excess of the limit, and generating fines to pay for the speed camera and operator.
