Pocket watches first came into being in the 16th century clearly long before wrist watches appeared and were designed in the early days to be carried around the neck of the owner rather than in a pocket due to their rather large size.. Before their invention the only way of telling the time was by means of a large fixed clock, a sun dial, or hunger pangs! The construction of railways led to pocket watches becoming required allowing railway workers to be aware of the time at which the next train would approach. They became particularly popular for general use after the first world war.

 

There are two principal types of pocket watch, the open face and the hunter style. Open faced pocket watches typically have the winder at the 12 o'clock position or sometimes at the 3 o'clock position and usually a second counting dial at the 6 o'clock position. Hunter case watches have a spring loaded cover providing the face and watch from greater protection from their environment.

 

Like wrist watches, pocket watches can be judged for their quality by the number of jewels used in their mechanism. Jewels used are usually very small rubies, diamonds or sapphires inserted into the watch movement to provide a hard-wearing, low friction bearing for cog spindles and other moving parts. Seven jewels is considered to be the minimum that a quality watch should contain though some go up to twenty five. Chains are normally used to secure pocket watches to clothing. A Double Albert would have one chain splitting into two in its centre with one half holding the watch and another the winding key on older models. A single or half Albert has a single T bar for pushing through button holes or lapels.
