Most of us have flown on a passenger jets out of a large airport in the UK cosseted in a (mostly) pleasant modern airliner. We think it's probably true to say that most men enjoy the experience and yet in a passenger jet we only get an inkling of the potential exhilaration that flying can really provide. You are just too remote from the experience and don't really get to see much due to cloud or extreme height obscuring the detail.

 

The best way to fly purely for entertainment is typically at 1000ft with just one or two other people on board with just a thin sheet of aluminium or fibreglass and perspex between you and the outside world. Unlike a large passenger aircraft all your senses are in for a treat. Now you can feel the small aircraft, whether it be a glider, light plane, or a helicopter, respond to the breeze and every small input from the pilot - which might be you on some flying experiences. You can see the detail in towns and in the country, and perhaps fly over your own house. You can feel the aircraft vibrate as the engine starts or experience the startling lift of a glider being winch towed into the air, or perhaps enjoy the view of a tow plane providing a more leisurely tow to a mile high.  You can hear the sound of the piston or gas turbine engines, or you may prefer the noise of the wind rushing past a glider's wings as it picks up speed descending. And they all have their own unique aeronautical smells.

 

If you really want to get close to the elements then there's always a microlight flight experience though our own preference of the best seat-of-the-pants experience would be a bi-plane with an open cockpit. A bi-plane might struggle to keep up with some of the motorway traffic below but you'll be having many times more fun! Now that is one experience to remember.
